Some of the watercolor paintings I made for “The Story of Bella”

(Film by Banu Yalkut Breddermann)

The film was showcased at The Quincentennial Foundation Museum of Turkish Jews.

Who is Bella Eskanazi?

As a Jew from Turkey, there are several things that make Bella’s personal history interesting; and these also shed light on to Turkey’s history, literature and names that have left their mark on their era.

Bella witnessed the exile of her journalist brother-in-law, Erol Güney, she inspired Orhan Veli Kanık (a very important Turkish poet who broke down the traditional rules of poetry in Turkish literature), she struggled to become a teacher at the Village Institute (because of her Jewish identity) and so on. Bella sheds light to Turkey of early 1900s and its missed opportunities.

While Bella strongly has love for Turkey, her memories reveal how the young stumbled and was disappointed in the hope that all different identities could exist together.
